Help to Hispanic/Latin@ Students- Strong importance on the family, but students may be close with more than just their immediate family.
- Boys and girls are taught rigid gender roles at home. For example, boys may be taught to be aggressive to earn respect. - Students like clearly defined expectations from the teacher. - Prefer a cool environment - Students like variety in the daily schedule, they do not like repeated routine every single day. - Students do not believe in eye contact with elders as a sign of respect. - Prefer kinesthetic and tactile learning, such as hands on projects and assignments. - A high amount of respect is given to food, teachers should avoid using food for play in the classroom if it will not be eaten in the end. - Students may prefer hugs and embraces to show their affection for each other and the teacher. - The classroom should be structured and formal design so that students know what is expected of them, behaviorally. - Teachers should be aware of cultural holidays such as Mexican Independence Day (Sept. 16th), Cinco de Mayo (May 5th), and Virgen de Guadalupe (Dec. 12th) when students may be absent from class. - The classroom should be bilingual and bicultural to incorporate the culture of the students. |
