Title: The Family Book
Author: Todd Parr
Illustrator: Todd Parr
ISBN #: 0-316-73896-4
Copyright Date: 2003
Summary: This is a book about all of the different types of families that are possible. It talks about how all families are different but at the core families all mean the same thing. The book ends with this note from the author, “Your family is special no matter what kind it is” and that final note is the entire point of the book. It mentions all different types of families and ends with the message that every family is special to the person who is a part of that family.
Would I recommend this book? : Yes,
because even though the illustrations are basic and not varied the end message of the story comes across clearly. The book mentions having two moms and two dads. Also the story mentions families with only one parent or families that have stepmoms, stepdads, and stepsiblings.

Title: The Boy Who Cried Fabulous
Author: Leslea Newman
Illustrator: Peter Ferguson
ISBN #: 1-58246-101-5
Copyright Date: 2004
Summary: This is the story about a boy who is told to go straight to school but instead he manages to be very late for class by enjoying everything that he saw on his way to school. The boy walks around and stops in a store where he sees a variety of things that catches his eye and talks about how wonderful everything is. When the boy, Roger, comes home his parents are mad that he is late and when they take him out the next day they tell him he can’t use the word “fabulous” so instead Roger uses the word “marvelous” and the story ends with both of his parents having a great time because they can see how much fun their son is having and how wonderful the world is when they take the time to stop and look around.
Would I recommend this book?: Yes
I would recommend this book but only because it does any excellent job of defying stereotypes of young boys. Roger appreciates different types of clothes and colors and he isn’t in a role that is related to sports. For that reason I think this would be a great classroom book for young boys to hear and be able to feel comfortable regardless of their interests.

Title: The White Swan Express: A Story About Adoption
Author: Jean Davies Okimoto and Elaine M. Aoki
Illustrator: Meilo So
ISBN #: 0-618-16453-7
Copyright Date: 2002
Summary: This is the story of four families going to China to adopt four baby girls and bring them to their homes in Canada and the United States. The families mentioned include a lesbian couple and a single woman who both decide to adopt a child as well as two couples with a husband and wife. The story details the journey from leaving their home countries, coming to China, meeting their new daughters, and bringing them home after everything becomes official.
Would I recommend this book for the classroom? : Yes,
this book does a great job of expressing how children can be adopted into a loving family. Also, it gives a nice idea about how adopting a child means the same thing as giving birth to a child for the families that are included in the story. Also, the use of a single woman choosing to adopt a child and a lesbian couple deciding to adopt is a great way to show students how there are many different types of parents or guardians in the world.

Title: It’s Okay to Be Different
Author: Todd Parr
Illustrator: Todd Parr
ISBN #: 0-316-66603-3
Copyright Date: 2001
Summary: The book talks about how there are many different type of people in the world and that it is okay to do things differently than others. The book mentions using a Seeing Eye dog, being in a wheelchair, and having glasses. Also, the book mentions that it is okay to have different Dads and Moms in a family. The story lists off a variety of things that children can have and do that are all okay and don’t make them any less special.
Would I recommend this book for classroom use? : Yes
This book would be wonderful to discuss with a classroom and help children learn how to embrace what makes them different. The illustrations are realistic but children would be able to apply the words to everyday life. For example one page says, “It’s okay to be a different color” and uses the example of a black and white zebra and a multi-colored zebra but the message can easily be applied to people.

Title: Heather Has Two Mommies
Author: Leslea Newman
Illustrator: Diana Souza
ISBN #: 1-55583-180-X
Copyright Date: 1989
Summary: This is a story about a little girl named Heather who lives with her two mommies. When Heather goes to school she gets sad when the teacher reads a story about Dads and Heather cries realizing she doesn’t have a Dad. Then the teacher talks about how all families are different and not every family has a Dad. Each child shares how their families are all different and they each draw a picture of their families to take home. The story ends with Heather showing her picture to both of her Moms and talking about how she loves both of them very much.
Would I recommend this book for the classroom? : No
I would not recommend this book for classroom use because of some of the language in the beginning would be upsetting for some parents. The book talks about how Mamma Jane get sperm to put in her vagina to make Heather and that language could be confusing and upsetting to children. Also, I am not sure that the book would be a good read aloud without first warning the parents about the content of the book and what words will be read to children.
